EDP Renewables North America Launches ‘Close the Loop’ Recycling Program

EDP Renewables North America (EDPR NA), a leader in clean energy, has unveiled a new recycling and upcycling initiative called the Close the Loop Program. This forward-thinking project focuses on giving new life to retired wind turbine blades from EDPR NA’s operational sites, aiming to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainability in wind energy development.

A Sustainable Solution to Wind Blade Retirement

Wind turbines are essential to clean energy generation, but they don’t last forever. After years of service, turbine blades must eventually be retired and replaced. Traditionally, retired blades pose a recycling challenge due to their composite materials. EDPR NA’s Close the Loop Program addresses this issue by partnering with local organizations to recycle and upcycle these blades into useful products.

The first phase of the program is already underway at the Blue Canyon Wind Farm in Oklahoma, where turbine blade segments are being transformed into parking stops and flooring for a local equestrian center. These durable materials offer long-lasting utility in a new form, demonstrating how wind energy infrastructure can continue serving communities even after decommissioning (EDP Renewables, 2024).

Partnerships with Purpose

To bring this initiative to life, EDPR NA is collaborating with several sustainability-focused organizations, including Carbon Rivers, a company specializing in advanced recycling and upcycling technologies. These partnerships ensure that blade materials are not only diverted from landfills but are also converted into high-performance materials suitable for construction, manufacturing, and other industrial uses.

“Wind energy is all about building a better future—and that includes how we handle the materials that power our turbines once they’re no longer in use,” said Sandhya Ganapathy, CEO of EDPR NA. “Our Close the Loop Program is an important step in extending the lifecycle of renewable energy infrastructure in meaningful and environmentally responsible ways” (EDP Renewables, 2024).

Expanding the Impact

While the program is currently focused on wind blade recycling, EDPR NA plans to expand Close the Loop to include other components and materials from wind farms. This aligns with the company’s broader sustainability goals and commitment to a circular economy, where materials are continually reused and repurposed instead of being discarded.

By repurposing turbine blades into community resources, the program not only supports waste reduction but also fosters goodwill and engagement with the local areas where EDPR NA operates.

Setting the Standard for Renewable Energy Sustainability

As wind energy continues to grow across North America, EDPR NA’s Close the Loop Program sets a strong precedent for end-of-life turbine management. With over 60 wind farms across the continent, the company is in a unique position to lead the industry toward more sustainable practices.

Through innovation, collaboration, and a focus on community impact, EDPR NA is turning an environmental challenge into an opportunity to reinforce the clean energy mission well beyond power generation.
